This Week in Health & Social Care – North Central London – 22 April 2026

Welcome to this week’s roundup of verified updates, policy developments, and sector insights, drawn from published sources across health and social care.

NCL Updates

NCL Care Leaders Forum – May Session
The upcoming Forum on Wednesday, 6 May 2026 (10:00–11:30, via Microsoft Teams) will bring together sector leaders for discussion on regulation, workforce, and quality improvement.

We are pleased to confirm participation from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), contributing to discussions on current regulatory priorities.

National & Policy Updates

CQC – Progress on Inspection and Assessment Activity
The Care Quality Commission has reported progress in its regulatory activity, including being ahead of schedule in delivering its target of 9,000 assessments by September 2026 and completing over 5,000 assessments since April 2025.

This reflects a continued focus on strengthening oversight and increasing inspection activity across adult social care services.

Home Office / Workforce – Changes to Health and Care VHome Office – Workforce and Immigration Trends (2026 Update)

Recent data published by the Home Office highlights a continued decline in visa applications linked to the health and social care workforce.

According to the latest monthly statistics (February–March 2026), Skilled Worker visa applications have fallen significantly year-on-year (approximately 44%), with a further 33% reduction in applications from dependants of health and care workers. This reflects the ongoing impact of recent immigration policy changes on workforce supply.

In addition, updates linked to the 2026 pay awards have introduced revised salary thresholds for visa eligibility, affecting roles across the sector and requiring providers to review sponsorship and recruitment practices.

Alongside this, recent rule changes introduced in March 2026 have strengthened compliance and enforcement measures, including stricter criteria for visa refusals and cancellations.

NHS England – System Priorities and Operational Focus
In its latest leadership update, NHS England highlighted progress against operational priorities, particularly in urgent and emergency care and referral-to-treatment pathways, while acknowledging ongoing system pressures.

The update reflects continued national focus on:

  • Managing demand across urgent care
  • Improving patient flow
  • Delivering against performance targets

DHSC – Public Health and Prevention Focus (2026–2027)
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has published the NHS Public Health Functions Agreement 2026–2027, setting out priorities including:

  • Improving vaccination uptake
  • Reducing health inequalities
  • Strengthening prevention and early diagnosis programmes

This reinforces the continued shift towards prevention and population health as key national priorities.

System & Sector Developments

Leadership and Governance Focus Across the Sector
Recent sector updates highlight an ongoing emphasis on leadership capability, governance, and board effectiveness as key drivers of service improvement.

There is increasing recognition that strong leadership and oversight are central to navigating current system pressures and delivering sustainable improvement.

Quality & Governance Focus

Data, Oversight, and Accountability
From April 2026, NHS England has introduced changes to how Freedom to Speak Up data is collected, shifting responsibility to organisations and integrating reporting into national data systems.

This reflects a wider move towards:

  • Increased organisational accountability
  • Strengthened governance processes
  • Improved use of data to support quality and safety

Final Thought

Across national updates this week, a consistent theme emerges — greater accountability, stronger oversight, and system-wide collaboration.

As expectations continue to evolve, providers who are able to demonstrate clear governance, workforce stability, and evidence of quality in practice will be best positioned to deliver safe and effective care.
